Book Report Two: Response Two

When I finished this book I went online looking for a sequel and I figured since it is the Chronicles of Mistmantle there would be more Chronicles. That is how much I enjoyed this book. I give this book a ten out of ten for sheer excellence. This book contains everything a good book should have; action, love, drama, betrayal, comedy, adventure, suspense, and hope. Urchin and I are hardly alike. He works hard just to become a tower a squirrel and hopefully join the circle. I don’t work hard and I don’t want to be a tower squirrel, I personally enjoy being human. I learned from this book that you need to act, not just sit on the sidelines waiting for somebody to save the day. Another thing I learned is to not judge people on how they look or act because people thought Urchin was not normal and though he deserved to be culled. (killing small or deformed babies because the would suffer in life and eat up the islands food stores and not pull their weight). People are people and they are probably will not change who they are. The only complaint I have is this books length and density. It could have been longer and they could have fit a lot more on a page. What I’m trying to say is that this book lacks substance. This book is awesome and I will read it again for the fifth time in a year or two.

Book Report Two: Response One

The book I read was Mistmantle Chronicles: Urchin of The Riding Stars. Urchin’s mother stowed away on a ship to the island of Mistmantle. She had fallen overboard and washed up on the Mistmantle shore. Right then she had giving birth to Urchin and died in the process. Urchin had been scooped up off the bank by a seagull and is dropped on the night of the riding stars. (Urchin is a squirrel and Mistmantle is populated by squirrels, otters, moles, and hedgehogs.) His fur is pale and when Brother Fir and Captain Crispin first saw him from Fir’s turret they though he was a riding star, then realized it was a squirrel and went to go see if he was still alive

I like this book because it is adventurous and for some reason I really enjoy books like this with tiny little forest animals with swords. I have read this book 3 times so clearly I like it. People who like Lord of The Rings books would like this book. This book is easy to read, and can easily be finished in a day. A person who could not stand Lord of the Rings books but like the genre would like this book it’s a very light, easy read.

Urchin had to make some incredibly tough decisions. For example, when Crispin was exiled Urchin could have gone with him or he could stay on Mistmantle and help Padra uncover the plot to murder the king of Mistmantle.

Theme

I think the theme of the Fellowship of the Ring is that teamwork is an essential to any well laid plan, and if you have plenty of friends your plan is less likely to fail. I can relate to this because when i am playing some of my 360 games online you can not usually win if your team does nothing. I think Frodo as he leaves with one boat and Sam that he wishes he would have brought the whole company too.

Theme and Storyline

Frodo must take the Ring of power that had been lost after Isildur cut Saurons finger off. Nine riders called the Naz-Gul are after Frodo and the ring. They had no idea he had it they were just going on suspicion and command from their leader Sauron.The ring was found by Gollum but was really still hidden because nobody knew Gollum had the ring and nobody knew where Gollum was or led alone existed at the time. Bilbo had met him in his cave deep under the misty mountains and beat Gollum in a riddles contest and one the ring. Bilbo had left the ring to Frodo and went to live a lif in solitude. Gandalf had wondered for years what the rings power was and if it was indeed THE Ring, The Ruling Ring, that Bilbo had stumbled across. For Frodo being the ring bearer takes a toll on Frodo as he tries with all his might to complete the task sent upon him from Elrond of Rivedell.

I liked It........

I liked this book very much. It was nice and long and i couldn't finish it in one day like most books i like a lot. Although i wouldn't recommend it seeing as nobody can stomach The Hobbit. I enjoyed it thoroughly and though not very many students like it i'd read it again for the third time. I like this book because it is largely adventurous and i have seen the movies, they were good, why shouldn't the books be? This book surprisingly had been written in the nineteen fifty's. Is has a few words we don't use today or those that have changed their meaning. As for an example "queer" they say that quite a lot. You would not see that in one of today's newer books. All and all its a great book. (for some people)

Setting

The story begins in Hobbiton; Hobbiton is a division of the Shire. The rest of the story takes place in the throughout middle earth. His first stop is Buckland where he is allegedly moving. He takes the old road to Brandybuck and decides not to take the old road because it is thought that they are being pursued. They proceed into the old forest and it is a weird twisted place. Trees are said to move about at night rerouting paths to ensnare unwary travelers. There they are almost captured by Old Willow, the oldest tree in the forest, but a fat man in a blue outfit assists them. His name is Tom Bombadil and he has lived in the Old Forest with his wife Goldberry. He directs Frodo the right way and they still manage to get lost. Tom comes helps them again because the had been trapped in barrows by Barrow Wights. Once through the forest and the barrows the reach a small village called Bree. This is where they meet Strider and he helps them with their journey to Rivendell. Later they ford the river separating them from Rivendell. Once in Rivendell they receive counsel and are off once again. With the newly formed company they try to make for Mordor . When they Cross the Mines of Moria they lose Gandalf to a Balrog, They make it to Lorien and rest there for a few days. After that the people of Lorien give them boats to drift down river right into Mordor, but the company gets split up and Frodo and Sam go it alone.

Main Character(s) # 2

Gandalf the wizard is in the order called The Wise. He is Gandalf the Grey, colors symbolized rank. Saruman the White is the leader of the order. Gandalf is tall, has long white hair and a long beard. Many people have said that they look very similar almost identical. He rides on the gallant steed Shadowfax. Gandalf has an extensive knowledge of the lore of hobbits and most of Middle Earth. Gandalf provides consul for the company and serves as a guide as well as a leader.

Gimli the dwarf is Gloin’s son. Gloin is one of the 12 dwarfs that went on the quest with Bilbo. Gimli comes from Beorning Mountains. He is as tall as a hobbit but very stout. He has orange hair and an orange beard. His weapon of choice is a battle axe. He and his companion Legolas do not get along well at first, but then soon become great friends.

Legolas is an elf from the Mirkwood. Elves are light footed and very graceful. Legolas Is a superb archer one of the best in the Mirkwood. He volunteered to join the company because most of the elves were leaving Middle Earth, and to improve relations with the dwarves.

Aragorn is the direct descended from the kings of old. He was met by Frodo in the Prancing Pony Inn. He had gone under the name “Strider” and he was a ranger. Rangers are the descendents of the kings of old. Aragorn is tall and has lengthy brown hair.

Boromir from Gondor has a broad build, and blond hair. He is shorter than Aragorn but broader. He has his Horn from his family. He attempted to take Frodo’s Ring but Frodo had slipped it on and had snuck away. Boromir had tried to apologize saying that a wave of madness had passed over him. Orcs had come to where he, Pippen, and Merry where and Boromir had tried to defend them but was smote by many arrows. Pippin and Merry were taken prisoner.

Merry and Pippin are also from the shire and are friends of Frodo. He had known them before they joined the company. Merry lives by the Brandywine which is a river. Pippen lived in Hobbiton near Frodo. Merry’s full name is Meridoc Brandybuck and Pippens full name is Peregrin Took.

Main Character(s) Description #1

Frodo Baggins is a hobbit. Hobbits are short, about 4 feet in height, and have large hairy feet. Frodo lives in a hobbit hole, in the Shire, called Bag End with Bilbo Baggins. He has bushy brown hair. Frodo was adopted by Bilbo to be the heir of Bag End and most of his possessions. He is tall for a hobbit and is good looking for one too.

He is clever and witty. Later on he takes up a quest to deliver the Ring to Mt. Doom. The Ring was once Bilbo’s and Frodo inherited it. He must sell Bag End to his relatives the S.B’s (the Sackville Baggineses) so he can go on his quest. The ring is a large responsibility and it takes a toll on Frodo. He is distraught that he might never see Bag End or the Shire ever again. At the end of the book Frodo separates from the company because he does not want to bring them through Mordor then to Mt. Doom. He makes a tough decision to leave his friends behind and proceed by himself. I think he made a very noble decision. Although he intended on going alone his servant Sam Gamgee heads him off and Frodo is compelled to take him along.

Earlier in his journey Frodo Passes through the Moria Mines he loses a very good friend, the wizard Gandalf. He is the leader and guide for the company, Bilbo’s long time friend, and Frodo’s friend. Frodo must have felt a very large range of emotions as did the rest of the company. After Frodo’s loss he goes into the forest of Lorien and Frodo marvels at its grandeur. Frodo is led to the elvish city and meets Lady Galadriel and is stunned by her beauty.

Sam Gamgee has always been fascinated by Elvish Folk. He is shorter than his master Frodo. He has blond hair and classic hobbit feet. He was Frodo’s gardener at Bag End. Sam came into the company’s employ because Gandalf spotted Sam eavesdropping on their conversation. He agreed as punishment to accompany Frodo on his quest.

When I Got My Dog.

When I was eight I walked through the doorway leading into my family home. I had just been at my Dad’s house for the weekend. As I stepped through the door I see this little fur ball looking at me. I asked my mother, “When did we get a dog?” My sister was surprised as I had been and we had no idea we'd be getting a dog. There, this cute little bundle of fur, stared at me for at least a minute, then started wagging his tail like no tomorrow. I had laid down on the couch and turned on the t.v and he hopped up and curled up next to me. It was a great day. Mom had got him from a girl in my sixth grade class. We had him four years before that so it was certainly a coincidence.
